Notes on the Grid

Grids break up space into units, controlling readability. Proper grid structure should be flexible yet structured, not rigid but mathematically based and precise. The grid structure found in books is simply a solitary field of type, but is characterized by line breaks, margins, and other paragraph variations.

Marinetti established the Futurist movement in 1919 Italy, questioning the function of the frame. He implemented the use of a very flexible grid with manipulated styles and sizes of type. This technique became a huge influence to Dada, who began to use collage heavily in their work.

El Lissitzky, a Russian Constructivist, chose to emphasize the mechanics of the letterpress in his poster design. His work also brought new ideas to the concept of symmetry and balance as space begins to work outside the visible plain. Bauhaus took these ideas and saw the grid as a "gateway to the infinite". Abstract artists like Mondrian used this expansion of the grid technique.

Jan Tschichold published "New Typography" in 1928, taking formal advice from the Futurist, Constructivist, and De Stijl movements.  The book presented the commercial opportunities of grid design as a means of order based on standard measure variations.


The Golden Section is the perfect manifestation of the grid, derived from the golden ratio that says the smallest of the two elements relates to the larger element in the same way that the larger element relates to the two combined. Based on the perfect spiral found in nature and the Fibonachi series.


The simplest grid is a single column of text surrounded by margins. When working with the grid, one can choose to work outside in, working with preset margin dimensions, or inside out, where the dimensions are decided afterward.


The Multiple Column grid is much more complex incorporating not only text but also illustration. The more columns, the more flexibility of the grid. Grids may also direct hierarchy in this manner.


A hang line allows extra space between two columns of text to maintain structure. A modular grid is the creation of grids -where horizontal divisions meet vertical divisions- across the page. This concept was used a lot by Modernists of the 1950s and 60s.

This is Real Design

This is an example of brilliant design- not for its aesthetics, but for its excellence in conceptual usefulness in the real world and its recognition of the habitual human psyche. These are playing cards with faces of 'Iraqi Most Wanted' in order of hierarchy, which are then dispersed in the military. The more the soldiers play with the cards, the more acquainted they become with the list and the faces; so that when they're in the field, they can more easily recognize these criminals.

Dropbox

Hi everyone,

Someone told me about this service, and I thought I'd pass it along. It's not directly related to type, but its a great utility if you work with files on many different computers, or you do something you'd like to save while working in the computer lab. Dropbox is a free service that gives you 2 GB of online storage for free. You can upload any type of file, and on Mac and PC, you can download a program that integrates the service into the Finder or Windows explorer, so it's drag and drop. Really helpful and much less of a hassle than remembering a flash drive or emailing files to yourself.

Phenylephrine MCI 5 mg Purpose Nasal decongestant

Uses
Temporarily relieves common cold/flu symptoms:
Nasal Congestion
Sore throat
Cough due to minor throat and bronchial irritation
Headache
Minor aches and pains
Fever

Warnings
Overdose warning: Taking more than the recommended dose can cause serious health problems, including liver damage. In case of overdose, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center right away. Quick medical attention is critical for adults as well as for children even if you do not notice any signs of symptoms.
Alcohol warning: If you consume 3 or more alcoholic drinks every day, ask your doctor whether you should take acetaminophen or other pain relievers/fever reducers. Acetaminophen can cause liver damage.

Do not use
With any other product containing acetaminophen
If you are now taking a prescription monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) (certain drugs for depression, psychiatric or emotional conditions, or Parkinson's disease), or for 2 weeks after stopping the MAOI drug. If you do not know if your prescription drug contains an MAOI, ask a doctor or pharmacist before taking this product.

Ask a doctor before use if you have
Heart disease
Thyroid disease
High blood pressure
Trouble urinating due to an enlarged prostate gland
Cough that occurs with too much phlegm (mucus)
Diabetes
Persistent or chronic cough as occurs with smoking, asthma or emphysema

When using this product do not use more than directed.

Stop use and ask doctor if
You get nervous, dizzy or sleepless
Pain, nasal congestion or cough gets worse or lasts more than 7 days
Fever gets worse or lasts more than 3 days
Redness or swelling is present
New symptoms occur
Sore throat is severe, lasts for more than 2 days, is accompanied or followed by fever, headache, rash, nausea or vomiting.
Cough comes back or occurs with rash or headache that lasts. These could be signs of a serious condition.

If pregnant or breast -feeding, ask a health professional before use.
Keep out of reach of children.

Do not use more than directed (see overdose warning)
Do not exceed 6 doses per 24 hours
Adults and children 12 years and over 2 softgels with water every 4 hours
Children 4 to under 12 years ask a doctor
Children under 4 years do not use

When using other Daytime or Nighttime products, carefully read each label to ensure correct dosing.
